So if you are reading this blog I am assuming you have already heard of the Law of Attraction.

But if this is something new to you, or you have only just heard the term, and maybe are new to this manifestation journey, then this is a quick overview of the fundamentals.

(We will take a deep dive on more specific topics within LOA in future blogs).

 The basic idea is this:

Your thoughts and emotions act like a spotlight. Shine it on the disaster, and that’s all you see. Aim it toward something better, even if it's just the feeling of five minutes without a hot flash, and your experience shifts. Slowly. Quietly. Sometimes barely noticeably.

The Law of Attraction is the idea that what you focus on, you attract. Like a magnet, but for thoughts. It assumes a belief in the ultimate power of the Universe, or source or God or whatever you would like to call that energy which is bigger than all of us, and that we can align ourselves to it and it will work to bring us our highest good.

You think about abundance? You start drawing in opportunities.

You focus on being broke and bloated? Well, guess what?

It’s about mindset, energy and emotion.

Thoughts become things” and “What you think about, you bring about”.

I can literally hear you rolling your eyes to the back of your head after reading that but please stick with me. I know you are saying,

“If it was as easy as that then everyone would have perfect lives and be millionaires”!.

Well, in all honesty, its not easy, but it is simple.

I don't know about you, but I cannot get on board with any practice spiritual or otherwise which offers a “quick fix”. I absolutely can embrace ideas to make life easier but there must be some sort of effort. It is a practice, and although some people can see changes in their lives pretty much immediately, for others its takes longer to make that shift. I am one of those people.

But it does make sense, and it does work

It means deciding you’d rather stop feeding into negative mental and emotional loops and start giving energy to tiny hopeful signals. It's less about manifesting big wins and more about rerouting your internal wiring to start with. When life feels like its in a bit of disarray, attention control can help you breathe, choose differently, act more clearly.

Four Core Ingredients of the Law of Attraction (What You Actually Do)

No, you don’t just sit cross-legged on a shag rug and wait for a Rolls Royce to pull up in your driveway. The Law of Attraction involves the following very brief main steps.

1. Clarity of Desire

Know what you want. Not kind of. Not “I just want to be happy” vague. Be clear. The Universe does not respond well to dreary and confused.

So, not this... “I just want a better life.”

Say this instead... “I want a remote copywriting job paying £100K, with flexible hours, a snark-free manager, loads of holidays and paid for travel.”

Want love? Be specific. Want money? Set a number. Want peace? Define what that looks like in your actual day.

There are loads of ways in which to do this, journaling, vision boards etc. and we will look at those in more detail in other posts. But for now, you could just simply write them down in a notebook.

2. Feel It Like It’s Already Here

Here’s the good bit.  The main part. You don’t just think about it, you feel it.

Want that gorgeous Mediterranean kitchen and a wine fridge? Close your eyes and imagine walking into it, barefoot, holding a glass of Malbec, looking smug AF. Let your body feel the joy and certainty like it has already happened.

Basically, pretend you’re a slightly deranged actress rehearsing your rich woman monologue. It works. Your inner voice has influence.

If you say, “Nothing ever works out,” your brain starts scanning for evidence of that. Change it to, “I’m open to noticing what's working.”

This doesn’t mean pretending everything is sunshine and roses, just don’t feed the gremlin voice that says you’re doomed. Imagine what it feels like to get what you want. Like you have what you want now. Don’t focus on the stuff itself but rather the feeling you would have if you had manifested those things.

Are you feeling calm, safe, satisfied, contented, excited, joyful? Those feelings are what you’re really after. Practice finding them, even for 30 seconds. That’s enough to start shifting your focus and your energetic vibration.

3. Take Inspired Action

This is where people fall down. This is the part where you say "Oh I knew there was a catch“ You still have to send the email, go on the date, or clean out that scary junk drawer to make room for new energy.

The Law of Attraction doesn’t mean just wishing, visualising, feeling, and then doing nothing. You have to show up, you still make moves, but you do it with excitement, not desperation. You send that CV because it feels aligned, not because your Aunty Brenda is nagging you. You sign up for a pottery class because it makes your heart happy, not because you’re trying to manifest your soulmate with clay.

The universe responds to your energy.

4. Trust & Detach - Believe

You have to believe it’s coming and stop checking the tracking number every 10 minutes like it’s an Amazon package.

It may seem like it's a contradictory message when you desperately want or need something but it is not. We should persist in the effort and energy of moving towards our goals through vision boards and journaling etc, but let go of the neediness feeling that surrounds it and truly believe that you have, and will have what you desire.

This can be really difficult when you are in a state of desperation, but that is when you really have to try and let go of that emotion.

There are a few ways you can try and do this but the way I like to think of it is exactly like if you had ordered a meal at your favourite restaurant.

Once you have given the waiter your order, you don’t then keep walking into the kitchen and asking to speak with the chef. You don’t keep worrying they are actually making your meal. You trust that everything is being cooked and it will be with you in plenty of time.

It is easier said than done, especially for those of us trained to control everything from kids’ schedules to coworkers’  and everything in-between. But once you have made your request and felt the emotion, it's out there. The universal energy knows what you want and you must trust it is on its way to you.

Beliefs matter massively in this manifestation process. If you secretly believe you're not good enough to have what you want, or too old, too thin, fat or weird, then that belief will be reinforced and not the request you have sent out to the universe.

Now, some beliefs are so hardwired into us that we sometimes don't even know we have them or where they come from. That is where this Law of Attraction journey can take us down a fascinating and ultimately life changing path as we learn to rewire these beliefs.

(Again, more on help with how to change your beliefs in another post).

If you keep saying, “Where is it? Why hasn’t it happened yet?, you’re sending a message of lack. You are still aligning with the energy of something you don't have. Trust it’s on the way. Let go of how. Go do something fun in the meantime. Even if that means sitting in your car alone eating fries and blasting ’90s Alanis. (I see you)

Benefits of Using the Law of Attraction after age 40

1. Reignites passion and purpose

Midlife can feel like a bit of an identity crisis. This helps you start dreaming again. Think back to all those things you enjoyed doing as a child and ignite your imagination again.

2. Improves mental health

Gratitude and positive focus lower stress. Focusing on what you do want helps stop the mental doom-scrolling and spiraling 3am thoughts No more “what-if” hellscapes.

3. Restores a sense of control

Hormones may be in a state of chaos in the midst of Perimenopause and Menopause and we can start to feel like life is a bit out of control. The Law of Attraction allows us to bring our thoughts back into focus and show us that we do have some sort of mastery over our mind.

4. Can boost confidence

Visualizing a vibrant, empowered version of yourself actually starts to feel real. You begin to see that version of yourself you may have put on the back burner as your busy life has taken over. It gives your inner critic a timeout: And let’s be honest, she’s been a noisy cow lately.

5. More energy

Not in a “I just ran a marathon” way. More in a “I’m not emotionally drained by my own negativity” way.

6.You become a magnet – Seriously, once you shift your vibe, weirdly good stuff happens. Free upgrades. Better people. Fewer weirdos in your inbox (not zero, but fewer).

Law of attraction basics gratitude journaling

Things you can do right now to make a start on your Law Of Attraction manifestation journey.

  1. Write down what you want. In present tense. “I have…” “I am…” Not “Someday I’ll…”

  2. Spend 2 minutes a day visualising it. Literally two. While brushing your teeth maybe.

  3. Do one small aligned thing per day. Apply for one job. Text that friend. Open a new savings account. (Or at least stop with Dr Google)

  4. Say thank you for what you already have. Start with your working knees and decent Wi-Fi. Gratitude keeps your vibe in the “more please” zone. Doesn't have to be earth-shattering. Maybe your coffee is the perfect temperature. Or your dog finally pooping before you had to leave for work.

  5. Raise your vibration. Do something that lights you up. Make a playlist of your favourite feel good songs and sing in the car, in the bathroom, the kitchen wherever you want to lift your emotions. Feeling good is the secret to moving all this along as fast as possible.

  6. Picture what you want, and act like someone who gets it. You want a calm household? Then maybe you skip the third dramatic sigh when your teenager leaves their socks on the stairs. Maybe.

  7. Speak nicely to yourself, even if it feels fake. "I’m figuring it out," works better than "I’m a disaster." You wouldn’t talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself. Cut it out.

8.   Stop hunting for proof that life is against you. If you’re looking for reasons to feel doomed, you’ll find them. But you can find other stuff, too, the good stuff.

A Few things to be aware of

Toxic positivity. Trying to be happy 24/7 when you feel like you’ve been set on fire from the inside? No thanks. It’s okay to feel like crap sometimes. LOA isn’t about ignoring reality, it’s about shifting it.You’re allowed to be pissed off, sad, or hormonal. Feel it, then pivot.

Avoiding action. Sitting on the couch visualizing your dream life won’t help if you’re not willing to send an email or take the leap. This isn’t “manifest and chill.”

Blame trap. If something bad happens, it doesn’t mean you “attracted it.” Life still happens. Menopause still happens. Your kid still eats cereal in bed and ruins the sheets. It’s not your vibe’s fault.

Overthinking it LOA should feel empowering, not like another thing to fail at. If it’s making you anxious, stop and take a deep breath. It should not be extra work it should be joyful.

Perimenopause and the Law of Attraction: A Spicy Combo

You might be thinking, “Why now? Why the Law of Attraction during this phase of life?” Let me explain why Law of Attraction and perimenopause/menopause might actually be the power couple we didn’t know we needed:

  • You’re done with bullshit. That gives you the clarity some people in their 20s simply don’t have. You know what you want, and what you’ll never put up with again.

  • You don’t have time to waste. Which means you’ll show up, do the work, and not spiral over whether it's “too much” to want money, love, or a bathtub you can stretch out in.

  • Your intuition is fire now. Seriously, your hormonal chaos is also a portal to fierce inner knowing. Listen to it.

  • You’ve seen enough to believe in weird things. Like how your friend met her husband on an aeroplane, or how you randomly got a refund the week you needed it most. Coincidences? Maybe. Magic? Maybe. But, it works.

Don’t Expect Fireworks

When people talk about the Law of Attraction, you might hear stories about instant success. Love at first swipe. Checks in the mail. Parking spots appearing like magic.

That was not my experience. Although I must admit the parking spaces thing truly is something I am great at.

But what did happen was I stopped spiraling so much. My inner, subconscious monologue, which previously sounded like a mean aunt, softened a little. I started looking for evidence that things might work out, rather than planning for disappointment. That shift made it easier to take small actions I’d been avoiding. Emails got answered. Bills got paid on time. I slept better.

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to chant. You don’t need to “vibe high” while managing teenagers, aging parents, and your ever-changing boob situation.

You can believe in the Law of Attraction and still think some people are full of crap. You can visualise a dream partner and call out red flags. You can want a million pounds and know that paying your bills on time is also necessary.

The Law of Attraction isn’t about becoming a spiritually perfect unicorn. It’s about aligning yourself with what you want instead of constantly feeding what you don’t. It isn’t here to replace therapy, medication, or actual effort. Think of it more like a steering wheel. It doesn’t move the car for you, but it helps you aim.

You might notice coincidences, better timing, or small lucky breaks. That’s nice. But the real magic? That’s in giving yourself permission to hope again, even a little. To believe that not every moment has to feel like hard graft.

You just need a tiny bit of faith, a dash of focus, and the guts to ask for more.

Because you’re not too old. You’re not too late. And it’s not too weird.

Now go and attract something fabulous.

My Final Thoughts for this basic Law of Attraction overview

If this whole idea feels weird, that’s okay. Try what works. Skip what doesn’t. Don’t worry about being perfect at it. You’re allowed to want things to get easier, and you're allowed to laugh your way through trying. Have fun with it, don't take it too seriously and celebrate the little things. The more you acknowledge the small wins, the more you start to believe that the bigger ones will happen for you

And if none of this clicks today? That’s fine. Come back to it later. Or not. You’re still doing great.

Just maybe talk to yourself a little nicer. You deserve that much, at the very least.

Some Books to get you started

  • “E-Squared” by Pam Grout

This one’s for skeptics. It gives you literal experiments to prove LOA to yourself. Bonus: it’s funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously

  • "You Are a Badass" by Jen Sincero – Think of this as your sarcastic friend giving you a pep talk with a side of cursing. Straightforward. Funny and practical.

  • "The Magic" by Rhonda Byrne – This one is a bit more rigid, with 28 days of gratitude practice. A good option if your brain craves structure and numbered lists.

  • "Ask and It Is Given" by Esther and Jerry Hicks – More spiritual than the others, but once you decode the metaphors, the suggestions are helpful. Focused a lot on feeling better as a way to shift your attention.

  • "The Game of Life and How to Play It" by Florence Scovel Shinn – Written in 1925. Delightfully weird. You might find yourself confused and fascinated all at once..

  • The Last Law of Attraction Book You’ll Ever Need to Read” by Andrew Kap

Straightforward and technique-based, great for people who just want to get on with it.

  • "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. The one that started this modern resurgence of interest. I can't not include it but there are other books which explain it more fully.
