Now in the spirit of honesty and transparency, I go through phases with Crystals.
Usually when I am having some sort of crisis and looking for immediate and shiny help.
I have often asked myself the question “how on earth can a sparkly rock manage to stop me bawling my eyes out at Cat protection league adverts?”, but sometimes they really do seem to work.
If you have ever been to any kind of spiritual fair, had a tarot card reading or even been to a yoga studio, you will generally find some random rocks around the place, calming the atmosphere and attempting to put a smile on peoples faces.
There is archeological evidence of crystals being used right from the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia, through ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome where they were used as amulets for protection from harm, to promote healing, and for some pretty fancy jewellery, right through to modern day.
Obviously there are hundreds of different crystals to choose from, and the advice is to choose a particular stone you are drawn to, and that is the one for you.
The mistake I made was going out and trying to buy one of each of everything in the hope that something might help. This is not advisable. This is where it can lead to overwhelm and you end up ditching the practice altogether. Just get a couple you like the sound or sight of keep them with you when you meditate, or work and just see how you feel.
So, I have broken it down into a little top 10 for you, with a bit of info about how each might help for particular issues and you can give them a try. They may help your vibe or your mood swings but sadly I've not found any that do laundry yet.
Amethyst - The “Calm down ok !” one.
Colour – Various purples from gentle lavender to that weird colour your teeth go after drinking red wine.
Origin – Brazil, Uruguay
Vibes – Calm, Peace, Clarity. Stress relief, enhances intuition.
Amethyst is like the friend who always has the herbal tea and unsolicited advice. Its great for emotional meltdowns, stress and naps. It's supposed to help you find clarity, soothe your anxiety and chill you out. It can help you not stamp up the stairs after your teenager has slammed their bedroom door for the 251455 time that day. It looks very pretty in a ring or necklace and if you balance it on your third eye during a little meditation, it i said to enhance your psychic abilities.... it may not, but you will look very whimsical whilst doing this.
Fun Fact -Amethyst was once believed to prevent drunkenness… Another fun fact... it does not!
Citrine - The “Overly cheerful life coach” one.
Colour – Bright yellow to honey-orange
Origin – Madagascar and Russia and Brazil
Vibes – Joy, Motivation, fake confidence, abundance, aids digestion and for those of us who still have periods, it helps with menstrual pain.
Citrine is like a motivational poster in rock form. Supposedly great for attracting abundance. Very useful for those of you who are interested in manifestation and the Law of Attraction. It's your "fake it until you make it" rock. Some people call it the merchants stone – supposedly good for money. If you hold it close to you it is supposed to have soothing properties which help with monthly cramps too.
Fun fact – Leave it near your keys and you’ll mysteriously stop forgetting them... Apparently, it works sometimes, according to other people.
Rose Quartz – The “Love me, Love me” stone

Vibes – Love, compassion , forgiveness, calm and reassurance. Good stone to have in a crisis. So basically always have one on you!
Rose Quartz is like the Bridget Jones of crystals. Its soft, emotional and into self care. Put one in your bra and pretend that the world is kinder than it is. It can help prevent rage-y outbursts at your reflection and helps you soften and be kinder to yourself and others.
Fun fact – Apparently it can help with your skin. It's cool on contact so can be nice and soothing. Great for after a menopausal inferno has errupted.

This one is basic but powerful, much like yourself. It makes other crystals stronger. It might make your willpower stronger against online shopping but it hasn’t worked for me yet. It enhances overall wellbeing and restores balance.
Fun fact – You can use it to try and help you remember your passwords and peoples names who you have known for 25 years…. Works about 40% of the time.
Moonstone – The "Chilled one" of Crystals
Colour – Milky white with flashes of Blue or peach
Origin – Sri Lanka, India,
Vibes – Intuition, Hormones and synching with the moon.
It is known to be a "womans stone" and is associated with feminine energy. Which is code for “may calm that hormonal outbursts”. Once you have a grip of yourself, you can then use it to align with the energy of the moon and let it soothe you and manifest some of your intentions. It is also really gorgeous to look at, so very good to get as a piece of jewellery.
Fun Fact - Pop it under your pillow when you go to sleep and dream about flying. Or Tacos. Either way, enjoyable.
Black Tourmaline - The one who "Tells it like it is"
Colour: Dark, like your sense of humour
Origin - Africa, Brazil, Sri Lanka
Vibes - Protection, boundaries, grounding, telling bad vibes to sit down
This one’s like a no-nonsense friend who tells you the truth while handing you snacks. It repels negative energy like garlic to a vampire. Great for that pesky co-worker who wont be quiet. It’s supposed to block negative energy, electromagnetic radiation, and annoying opinions from your neighbour. It is heavy and comforting and makes you feel like you have a solid energetic bouncer.
Fun Fact - Black tourmaline is known to absorb electro magnetic energies. It could be handy to put near your phone at night, or near your teenager depending on their current mood.
Carnelian - the "Lets get Loud" stone
Colour -Fiery orange to reddish brown
Origin - India, Peru, Uruguay, Brazil
Vibes - Motivation, courage, Confidence, creativity, waking up with energy that’s not caffeine-based
Need a push? Carnelian screams “let’s get moving!” like a personal trainer with an energy drink. Great for those days when you stare at your to-do list and choose to scroll memes instead. It's for that boost we need so we don't nap when we are supposed to be being productive. It also helps with increasing your libido, so go get yourself some of that gorgeous flame coloured rock and see where the night takes you.
Fun fact - Wearing it makes you feel like you might actually finish something. Not guaranteed, but the illusion is pleasant.
8 Labradorite - The "Disco ball of wonder"
Colour - Grey with flashes of blue and green,
Origin - Canada ( Labrador...obvs), Norway, Madagascar
Vibes - Intuition, transformation, protection.
It’s said that Labradorite is good for those going through change. So if your personality, body temperature, and tolerance for noise all shifted in the last 15 minutes, congratulations—you qualify. It is known to boost your psychic power and increase your mental clarity. It can act as a shield against negative energies and help you hold on to the ever declining energy you might still have.... and it looks gaaawwwgeous!
Fun fact - In Inuit legend, labradorite is believed to have been created when a warrior freed the Northern Lights trapped in rocks by striking them with his spear. Hold it under direct light and you might zone out for three minutes. It’s like a legally safe trance.
9 Fluorite – The "Nerdy" Crystal
Colour - Rainbow swirls of greens, purples and blues
Origin - China, Mexico, USA,
Vibes - Focus, learning, decision-making, pretending you understand spreadsheets
Fluorite is your brain’s hype assistant. Great for mental clarity, clearing the brain fog and those days where you can’t remember why you walked into the room. Lets face it, during Perimenopause and Menopause this is the kind of help we need on a daily basis. It is known as the " Genius stone". Fluorite is like a study buddy with a touch of magic. Keep one on your desk and stare at it when you brain feels like mashed potatoes.
Fun Fact - Can double as a mental reset button. Just stare at it blankly for five minutes—it counts as meditation if no one’s watching.
10 Selenite – The “Spiritual Mr. Clean” one
Colour - White, translucent, and slightly fragile.
Origin - Mexico and Morocco.
Vibes - Cleansing, clearing, purity and peace
Selenite doesn’t even need to be cleansed itself. It is used to “clear” energy. You can wave it around like a spiritual lightsaber. It creates a safe and peaceful environment and helps to ward off any evil spirits which may be lurking. It is said to be able to calm your mind and enhance your mental wellbeing so if you do get a 5 minute break to meditate its a useful one to take along with you.
Fun fact - Selenite is so soft, you can scratch it with a fingernail. Great for stress relief if you enjoy gently damaging things.
So there we have it.
Do these crystals fix your life? Probably not. However, if you're currently a perimenopausal disaster like me, just know you’re not alone.
Sometimes, it takes a handful of rocks, a bit of belief, and the ability to laugh yourself through a hot flush. So grab whatever sparkly object speaks to your soul. Some of them look nice, some of them look quite frankly like a piece of concrete but just try not to overthink it and go with whatever you are drawn to. There are plenty of places to order online, and some lovely little shops if you look around your local area. A crystal doesnt have to be huge and flashy, it can be tiny and sometimes pretty insignificant looking, but its beneficial energies will still be present.
Throw it in your bra, meditate with it, or just admire its shimmer. Worst-case scenario: you have something pretty to look at while you try to remember why you walked into the kitchen.
